A sprawling masterpiece. A Timeless, One of a kind album. March 6, 1999 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This album is one of the all time best in Music history. Probably the best debut album ever along with "The Doors." All of Nico's tracks are super. Herion is profound, Sunday Morning is addicting, There She Goes is pure and raw rock. This album has been an inspirational influence on scores of artists since its release. If you must have only one VU cd this is the one to get. Otherwise go buy all 4 of their studio albums at once. They are that good, right up their with Zeppelin,The Doors, Floyd, and The Beatles.
This is what the 60's was all about. January 19, 1999 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
On their first recording, the VU did what many bands couldn't do...create a near masterpiece. "Heroin" takes you on that speed rush while "sunday Morning", "Femme Fatale", and other songs are not as abusive. In fact, these songs pop up before "Heroin" and get you semi-ready for that big hit. Lou Reed proves that he is a fantastic songwriter. They would not be this good again until "Loaded", by which time Reed would break up the band. If you want an interesting listening experience, this is as good as it gets.
Alternative starts here December 9, 1998 29 out of 34 found this review helpful
Anyone who wants to know where "alternative" music came from should be pointed in this direction. Released in 1967, this album was a good 20 years ahead of its time, and still packs enough punch to blow away today's wanna-be rock bands. It has influenced acts from Talking Heads to Nirvana. In fact, the fall-out left from the impact of this album is still felt today. "Heroin" is famous for its naked honesty of a drug fix, but just as riveting is "Venus in Furs," a twisted, sado-masochistic verse that would make David Lynch drool with envy. Another drug reference song, "I'm Waiting for the Man," with Lou Reed's nervous guitar lick, perfectly captures the moment. Not that this group was all kinky business, though. Reed swipes the intro to Marvin Gaye's "Hitch Hike" to fuel "There She Goes Again." "Sunday Morning" plays like the calm before the storm with its evocation of the perfect sunrise, while "I'll Be Your Mirror," and "Femme Fatale" are other achingly beautiful songs sung by chanteuse Nico. And John Cale adds his avant-garde flavour to "European Son". Moe Tucker stakes her claim as the greatest under-rated drummer in rock. A tremendous album, and one of the best debuts ever.
The early, hungry VU's finest hour October 18, 1998 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After some thirty years, the notoriously nihilistic, lo-fi debut from these pioneers is still an exhilarating listen. Lou's paeens to drug abuse, overdosing, and sm are disturbing enough when counter-balanced by those sweet songs sung by Nico the ice queen. Then, by the end, the feedback freakout of 'European Son' anticipates everything to come from The Stooges to Nirvana. Recommended.
You'll love it till you die October 3, 1998 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This album is timeless. Made 30 some years ago, this album STILL kicks a**. It's really incredible. How could you not want to sing to "Sunday Morning"? How could you not want to listen to the very strange but very intoxicating Nico singing her three songs? And Reed simply kicks a** on his very lonely, "Heroin", and the funny, "There she goes again". Listen, no matter how cool you are, every man has been a fool around a woman. Reed bonds with us with that song. He picks us up. The rest of the album is terrific as well. They're innovative and you can tell just how innovative when you allow others to listen to it: Your friends will absolutely love it or absolutely hate it. There's no middle ground. They're not formula. They're not regurgitated, and they're certainly not unimaginative. Drive down the road with your windows down blaring "All Tomorrows Parties". They'll think you're a nut. You'll know you've got your hands on a piece of incredible greatness.
