Fantastic June 18, 1999 A classic album that should be in everyone's music collection. With the exception of "Run Run Run," I love every single track on this record. The performances are truly amazing.
It has a banana on the cover! June 17, 1999 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
No band in the history of rock and roll broke down as many forbidden barriers as the Velvet Underground did in their way-too-brief existence. NOBODY wrote about the things Lou Reed did in 1966. I mean jeez when rock musicians were singing about "I'm in love and it's a sunny day/Good day sunshine" (from "Good Day Sunshine" by the Beatles) and "I'm a believer now I couldn't leave her if I tried." (from "I'm A Believer" by the Monkees or "I sit and watch as tears go by." (from "As Tears Go By" by the Rolling Stones), The Velvet Underground were telling about street life in New York: "She's down on her knees again... She won't take it from just any guy... You'd better hit her." ("There She Goes Again") and "Heroin be the death of me. Heroin it's my life and it's my wife." ("Heroin"). Even the name Velvet Underground was the title of a sado-masochistic book. pBut it's not perfect (very very few albums are) and don't let ANYBODY tell you that it is. I can't stand Nico's vocals, so I find her songs downright irritating. And the album ends REALLY boring and monotonous with "The Black Angel's Death Song" and "European Son". Ever notice that "The Black Angel's Death Song" has no melody at all? pBut all the rest... just brilliant! And it has a banana on the cover! pWhy I have no idea. What does a banana have to do with drugs, death, and sado-masochism? They should have put something really scary on there. But a BANANA?? Why?
This is a timeless masterpiece June 16, 1999 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wow, I never knew Sunday Morning was Nico. It's so obvious now that you mention it. I thought it was Lou trying to sing a soft song. Anyway I bought this record 15 years ago in tape form and now I got in on CD and it sounds great
What can be said ... June 15, 1999 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
... that hasn't been said before? Only that these songs still sound fresh today; that Lou Reed never made anything this profound during his long, long solo career; and that this album exists more or less in a category of its own. It's not psychedelia, it's not garage, and it's not punk (or even proto-punk). It's the sound of three tired men and two tired women in a tired, flawed world. Yet beauty manages to shine through ... "Watch out, the world's behind you," indeed.
Deserves its classic status June 11, 1999 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
All great albums have a unique personality; more often than not they achieve this in spite of wide-ranging musical styles. Like the Beatles' 'White Album', 'The Velvet Underground Nico' juxtaposes darkness and (twi)light, experimentation with straight-ahead rock n' roll - and it somehow all works. But the extra ingredient that lifts the album above the ordinary is the deep, dark voice of Nico - how different (and inferior) this album would have been if Lou Reed had taken lead vocal duties on songs like 'Sunday Morning', 'I'll Be Your Mirror' and 'All Tomorrow's Parties'. On the other hand, his typically detached readings of 'Heroin' and 'Venus' are superb. pPersonal favourites: Most of the record, but particularly 'Heroin', 'Venus in Furs', 'I'll Be Your Mirror', 'All Tomorrow's Parties'. Not too keen on:'Run Run Run'. This is one of those albums that has been tagged with the label 'classic' since its release and still sounds just as good today. What else can I say? I recommend that you order the Banana immediately from your friendly neighbourhood grocers at Amazon Dot Com.
