Not exactly as described November 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this to hold my HP Pavilion with a 17" screen. In the rear compartment there is a special padded sleeve for the notebook. If it is used, the laptop pokes out the top of the bag and it can't be zipped up. Putting the laptop in the that same compartment, but not inside the padded sleeve allows the backpack to be zipped completely closed.
All in all it is a good value at $40, it would be a complete rip-of at the full price.
Excellent Product November 2, 2008 I bought the bag for my girlfriend. She is very happy with it. The only issues is that when we got it, on the first day the cell phone pouch ripped off while she was trying the bag on.
Great computer backpack, 17" does fit with small alteration August 21, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this at Sam's club for around 40 bucks for commuting on a motorcycle. As a previous reviewer stated, this will not fit 17" widescreen laptops, UNLESS you do what I did and simply rip the seam at the bottom of the laptop sleeve all the way across to the sides (center section first, then two short side sections along bottom of seam). Then the laptop slides right down to the bottom of the back and voila, perfect fit. I have an ECS G900 laptop that is possibly one of the largest available - it measures 15.6" W x 11.6" D x 1.75" thick. This is just slightly larger than other models I have seen listed by reviewers that won't fit without modification. Just get a $0.99 seam ripper and spend a few minutes to open it up and save a lot of $ on the bag itself. I only gave 4 stars because I had to rip the seam myself, otherwise would give this 5.
Excellent backpack (if you buy from the right place!) July 18, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased this for $39 + tax ($42 total) from Sam's Club. If you paid $70 or more, you got ripped off. If you pay $50+ for the Maxxum model, I think you're losing out too.
Overall it's an extremely well-made bag w/high-quality zippers & an abundance of pockets & sections, etc. The quality is what caught my attention in the first place. After looking at several other Swissgear & Targus models online & in stores, I'm very happy with this bag.
I was worried that it wouldn't be comparable to the "Maxxum" model, but after finally tracking one down at Staples ($69.99 + tax), I'm confident this bag offers more room and better organization. The Maxxum has no pen/pencil pockets, less space for books/binders/papers, and fewer internal pouches. It may have a slightly deeper laptop section, but my laptop is 12", so I don't care about that.
This bag does not have the middle "open" area like the Maxxum, and the media pocket is in the large back section, separate from the black-lined "quick-access" pocket on top. The Maxxum model puts the media & quick access pockets together in a single red-lined pouch on top.
The Maxxum's laptop pouch also seemed slightly sturdier w/a different clasp & perhaps a bit more padding on the back. The Wired bag has 2 padded dividers in the main section, plus a full-length zippered pouch, unlike the Maxxum's smaller pouches. Finally, the Maxxum has a 2nd handle apparently for looping over a luggage cart. The Wired bag does not have that handle. Both have the sturdy, reinforced plastic handle.
The "wired" aspect of this bag is kind of a neat idea, but seems a bit superfluous. You put your music player in the media pocket & plug in the integrated headphone cord. Your headphones then plug directly into the backpack shoulder strap. You have no access to the music player (you wouldn't w/most similar models either), but if the integrated wires crap out, you're stuck unless you cut your own hole in the bag or leave the player in your pants pocket. On the plus side, you don't have to thread your headphones through each time, and your player is more protected. I noticed a little static when actively turning the integrated headphone cord back & forth, but music came through fine otherwise & didn't sound any different.
The only other complaint I have is that the bag wasn't available in blue - only red & all black @ Sam's. Oh well. I'm quite happy with it.
Top-Notch, Stellar, and Rugged Backpack June 16, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I became a full time student at college and bought a laptop and was looking into buying a nice backpack to hold my comp. First thing I looked at was Swiss Gear. Anything they make is just first-class with fine craftsmanship. It took a while before I found this backpack but when I bought it and let it sit on my shoulders, it just felt awesome. I was glad about my purchase. Looking at this backpack, it comes with 2 large, and I mean really large pockets. The back pocket is for a laptop, and this has plenty of padding into which your laptop will sit so even if it falls for some god-forbidden reason, you shouldn't be too worried. **THOUGH THE DESCRIPTION SAYS 17" LAPTOPS, IT MAY NOT BE THE CASE FOR ALL LAPTOPS** I purchased a Dell 15.4" and it sits in there flush and perfectly but if my laptop was any bigger, it wouldn't fit into that pocket. So, just be aware that with some laptops, 15.4" might be the biggest that it can hold. There is also an elastic pull-strap to secure your laptop even more. Overall, great protection for the money. I got this for around $40 in stores by the way. In this backpack, I've held as much as my laptop and 2 full-size textbooks, along with other accessories such as a power charger and mouse, and pencils, pens, etc in the front and side pockets and the padding on the shoulders does wonders. It never feels like it will just break even when you're carrying the heaviest load. Other than that, it looks great and just has a quality feel to it just because it is Swiss Gear.
PROS: 1.) Lots of Room - Holds a large laptop (be aware that it might not hold all 17" laptops), has a second large pocket for books and stuff. In addition, a pocket in the front and two in the side for extra accessories. 2.) Lots of padding - Makes it so that it's never too hard on the shoulders even when walking for a long ways...and trust me, I've walked around campus quite a bit with this thing. 3.) Laptop will feel protected at almost all times - Unless you completely just fall straight on your back, this backpack will protect your laptop from small drops for the most part. 3.) Quality feel - Can't go wrong with Swiss Gear. All the zippers, pockets, straps, and handle really feel great. 4.) An Excellent College Backpack - Really goes the distance.
CONS: 1.) Not completely waterproof....This isn't that big of an issue though compared to the pros of this pack. One time it was raining heavily, and when I later got back after running through the rain, found out that some of the pockets felt slightly moist (no water inside however). 2.) Slightly pricey...still a great deal. Look around however, because I got it at Sam's Club for $40.
**Overall, it's an awesome backpack and looks and feels great. I give it a 5/5 and am completely satisfied with my purchase. Have had this for one whole year through college now and will probably last a lot longer.**
