3 out of 5 stars good fun until it breaks   December 26, 2008

We bought this for our than 6 year old boy who likes to collect bugs, plants and other specimen and play "scientist" in his "lab". It worked great for that purpose for a few months, about 3 or 4. What is particularly good is the "light from above" feature, which allows to look at specimen that have not been prepared to be thin enough for conventional viewing. Also the magnification levels are just right, making it easy to visually connect for example a just caught fly, the view on it's wing to a zoom on the finer features of the wing. br /Unfortunetly the part that transmits the force from little hands on the lens to rotate the lens holder from one magnification to the next is ill designed and broke off after just a few months of usage. Now the "cheap plastic" contstruction that has been mentioned by other reviewers becomes visible, as the part is an irreplacable custom molded plastic part, without which the microscope can not be used any more. br /We bought it at 80 $ or so and are very disappointed with this outcome.

4 out of 5 stars Great learning fun   November 28, 2008

I purchased this microscope for my 7 year old. She finds it easy to use. It is light weight and appears durable. Having both the micro and macroscope lighting capability has allowed lots of exploration in the world of science. I have to agree with other reviews that the 4ooX lens is not good. Views are blurred from that lens. All in all a very nice microscope.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Microscope for a first time one!   March 16, 2007

Our grandson, who lives in WA, just had his 8th birthday, so we felt it was a great time for him to discover the fun of a microscope. He was thrilled! He called us to say he loved the prepared slides that came with the microscope as well as making his own slides of bugs, hair, leaves, and even blood from a prick. He said it's easy to focus and his sister, who is 11, as well as his 4 year old brother loved using it too.br /br /We were pleased to hear that he was enjoying this new world of micro discovery. Sounds like it is a "winner" for all ages!

4 out of 5 stars Great product for a 7 year old   February 9, 2007

I bought this for my 7 year old daughter - this was her only request for Santa. I am very impressed with the quality of the microscope. Based on the pictures I saw before I ordered it, I was worried because of the plastic, toy-like look (and it didn't look like the microscopes I used in my science lab at work). But this is a case where the product is well-designed for its users - the design makes it easier to carry (light, easy to grip) and easy to adjust with big knobs. In real-life, it does not appear "plasticy" or cheap. My only problem is that there is not a good way to store the scope and the accessories - the original box is designed more for display on the store shelf, than it is storing it after opening. If this was solved I would give it a solid 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great Item   January 10, 2007

My son received this microscope for Christmas and he said it was the best gift he got this year. He's 7 yrs. old, so he does need some assistance using it, but for the most part it's easy to use, sturdy, and a lot of fun. We've made a few of our own slides and used the slides that come with it. Price wise it's a bit steep, but you will get a quality microscope if you buy this one. br /
