2 out of 5 stars Great concept, needs quality improvement   November 20, 2008
I received this as a gift in late 2007. This product is a great concept, as I've been able to use it in a variety of applications: grilling, baking/roasting, and an outdoor smoker.

Unfortunately, it stopped working after 4 uses. The temperature reading would be way off, like 178 degrees at room temperature, 59 degrees for an ice slurry (chipped ice/water; used to determine accuracy), etc.

The Oregon Scientific website was difficult to navigate and find information about the product, but once I found information it recommended replacing the probe. This was a $10 cost + s/h. I shouldn't have to do this for a new product.

It worked once, then the problems started again. It's within the warranty period of 1 year, so we'll see of Oregon Scientific honors it. I'm being cautiosly optimistic.

In the meantime, be aware that this product requires some quality improvement to become more consistent.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product!!!   November 4, 2008
I've used other wireless thermometers and they do not hold a candle to this little gem. I live in a 3 story townhouse apartment, so my living room is on the 2nd floor... quite a ways away from my smoker. The other wireless thermometers that I've had could never read the signal at the grill when I put them on my coffee table. Call me lazy but when I'm smoking food I hate having to walk up and down my stairs to the patio and back up to the living room when I'm trying to watch a ballgame. The Oregon AW131 thermometer reaches this far though and I couldn't be happier with it. The temp readings are very accurate and I've had no problems with it whatsoever. Very good product and I highly recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars Great concept, poor product   November 3, 2008
I bought this last Christmas for my grilling, cooking crazy mate. It worked twice before the sensor stopped communicating with the handheld component. He was disappointed, as was I. It was a huge waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars Kudos to the Company for Caring   October 15, 2008
I bought this item for my husband on this site. I could not get a wireless signal between the digital device and the probe to save my life, so I set up an exchange with amazon. (Side note: amazon's return policies and procedures are fantastic!!!)

The second one - same problem. I was incredibly frustrated. Before giving up, however, I did an internet search for the company's contact information and gave them a ring. They were great! It is clear they care about customer satisfaction. They walked me through getting started (though I wish the included directions could have done the same), and we got it to work. It required a bit of tinkering with the wireless device and the reset buttons near the batteries, but they were finally working in tandem. Any company that helpful deserves the benefit of the doubt if their directions are a bit iffy and the item doesn't work right out of the box.

My husband hasn't gotten a ton of use out if it yet, but so far so good! I will definitely update if there are any future issues with this product!

5 out of 5 stars Good quality great features   October 6, 2008
I have earned different tempt products for cooking. This by far is one of the best thought out designs yet. It's construction is solid and of good materials. The functions are intuitive and programmable. It is easy to program without the need to breakout the instruction manual. The transmitter marries easily to the receiver. There are plenty of mode to select how well you want something cooked, but they are easily adjustable to your taste. The talking feature I first thought was gimmick, especially when it gets close to the program temp. it begins to say "almost done." I am finding out how convinient those notices are so I would scramble to fetch what I need to remove the food before it burns. The range is excellent, I haven't lost connection so far. The temp probe cable length is generous, so you can easily place the transmitter on a surface in most kitchen designs.
