Description Your favorite party band for the last 25 years, Kool and the Gang plays a soulful set of nearly three decades of all-time hits at the world famous House of Blues.P Songs:br Emergency, Hollywood Swinging, Jungle Boogie, Kool and the Gang, Breeze and Soul, Chocolate Buttermilk, Sea of Tranquility, Let the Music Take Your Mind, Wild and Peaceful, Open Sesame, Summer Madness, Ladies Night, Get Down on It, Celebration.
Amazon.com Ah, bliss. If a casual acquaintance with Kool and the Gang only brings to mind a handful of Top 40 tunes since the 1970s ("Get Down on It," "Celebration," "Joanna," etc.) then ILive from House of Blues/I is here to broaden the record. In a thrilling display of RB mastery, this army of horn players, vocalists, and captains of rhythm commandeers the Chicago stage, overwhelming everyone with relentless pop-funk, luscious soul, waves of jazz, and a dollop of hip-hop. Short on ballads, the Gang's set nevertheless is a stirring affair, with several instrumental tracks highlighting the group's orchestral majesty. But let there be no mistake. This show is a party, all right, and the many past and present members of the group who turn up to celebrate want to cherish the good times as much the crowd. I--Tom Keogh/I

KG! Gimme some horns! November 24, 2007 The greatest KG concert recorded ever. The performance is awesome. Sound and picture quality is great. Especially DTS surround makes you feel right in the HOB Chicago.br /One major defect is FRESH! :)
Old School at the New School March 8, 2007 Great DVD for the Kool the Gang fan, or a newcomer to their live act. They play a lot of the pre- JT jazz/funk jams that made them inovators in the Funk genre. They also touch the big hits from their "pop" era that made them world famous, and well off! Great sound, and picture...it's a fun time for all that enjoy good ole American Funk and Soul.
True appreciation of music September 1, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you really appreciate good music on the old school tip. Kool The Gang "Live at the house of blues" is a must to get.br /br /You won't be disappointed but on the other hand if you're looking forward to hearing the Kool The Gang with the commercial success with lead singer James "JT" Taylor with hits like Joanna, Cherish, Fresh, Let's go dancing, Etc. Then don't buy it because you won't hear any of them songs and plus "JT" is not singing with them on this DVD.br /br /Personally, I'm glad that Kool the Gang did not play any of the latter. They kept it vintage and focused more on the artistic art of music. These cats can play as well as sing.br /So if you're down with the old school songs like Celebration, Summer madness, Jungle Boogie, Hollywood swingin', Breeze and Soul, Etc. You won't be disappointed.br /
Awesome Jazz-Funk DVD! The Original Kool The Gang Music! November 18, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Purchased this DVD and it was exactly what I was looking for. I'm a big fan of the early Kool music. Hollywood Swinging and Jungle Boogie were some of the first 45's I purchased as a kid. I'm a huge fan of the instrumentals and loved that Kool The Gang, Ohio Players, P-Funk and also Earth Wind Fire had big horn sections. Loved Summer Madness and Sea of Tranquility. I never cared for the JT era except for Ladies Night and Too Hot. They went too Top 40 for my tastes with the addition of JT Taylor. They didn't need a lead singer, the music was funky enough! So if you're looking for the popular hits with JT on the mic, you'll be disappointed. br /br /They could have left off Celebration and thrown in Rhyme Tyme People and Funky Stuff. Plus a little more Jungle Boogie after the rappers were done would have made this the ultimate DVD. I can't complain though, it was pretty much what I wanted. 5 stars!
THIS is the DVD to buy November 16, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Unless you're hung up on the fact that some of the founding members are not on this DVD, don't worry about the criticisms expressed by others here. I'm going to give you a review from an avid DVD buyer and fan of bands such as Earth Wind Fire, Chicago, Tower of Power, and others.br /br /The camera work is fantastic and modern (recorded in 2001). The sound is fantastic, with pumping drums and bass, and warm and jazzy trumpets. EXCELLENT SOUND, and in DTS 5.1 if you want it. That part of the DVD is ALL SET.br /br /The set list is nice and funky, with some welcome intermissions in jazz (they kind of sound like Chicago meets Earth Wind Fire in some of the songs). I had previously only heard their "pop" funk songs, but after listening to this DVD I have a lot of respect for the new musicians of Kool The Gang. They got the chops.br /br /One thing: three or four members of the original crew are here, the rest of the 7-8 other musicians are new bloods whose energy and talent are great.br /br /I enjoy this DVD greatly and pop it in often. Buy it. THIS is the Kool The Gang DVD you want.
