| Editorial Reviews:
Album Description Finally, a Christmas album worth listening to all year long. When Mary Chapin Carpenter set out to create Come Darkness, Come Light, she took a far different approach to recording a holiday album than most artists do. Rather than simply lending her voice to time-worn Christmas standards, Mary Chapin wrote her own set of heartfelt songs which explore the many meanings and emotions that Christmas evokes in each of us. These songs, mixed with a few hand-picked gems from other writers and rarely heard traditional tunes, will speak directly to the hearts of all Mary Chapin Carpenter fans. These are not merely holiday songs, they are simply great Mary Chapin Carpenter songs, both warm and intimate. And while they artfully capture the spirit of the season, this is a rare Christmas album that doesn't feel like it needs to be kept on the shelf between New Year's and Thanksgiving. With stellar support from longtime musical partners Jon Carroll (piano) and co-producer John Jennings (guitars), Mary Chapin's voice goes down as warmly as hot cider on a cold winter's night.

depressing Christmas songs January 6, 2009 I love Mary Chapin Carpenter, but this CD has some very depressing songs on it, especially for Christmas. I expected catchy and lively tunes from her. Her tenor voice adds to the somber effect.
Magnificent! January 3, 2009 Mary's lirics are always unique... but this CD's lyrics are exceptional! Her music never fails to impress me and it stays with me. She is truly gifted!!
A "Wundebar" Winter Season CD December 30, 2008 I first listened to the sample songs on Amazon before I ordered this and I was not disappointed in my selection.br / This is one of the best Christmas purchases I made and I think that Mary Chapin-Carpenter's album is absolutely wonderful.br / Her voice is both soulful and soothing. I especially like Hot Buttered Rum and Come Darkness Come Light..... it mostly contains original songs and not your usual Christmas fare.br / I will have this in my collection for a long time and don't see it as just a Christmas album but one that can be enjoyed all winter long. My rating ...5 stars.
Got caffeine? December 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This anticpated CD for the holidays turned out to be a real sleeper--literally. Ms. Carpenter has a great voice and sings with talented musicians. But, the tone and cadence of the "Holiday" songs are a downer. Every one of them is slow, lethargic, mono-toned, and just plain lifeless. I don't know what funk she's in, but I surely hope that she snaps out of it. You won't with this CD. Drink plenty of coffee!
Poetic, beautifully crafted Christmas CD December 27, 2008 My first reaction upon hearing the musical treatment of "Once in Royal David City," was to think of the guitar and music background to the vocals of singer/songwriter Karla Bonoff by Andrew Gold and Kenny Edwards. Then, on other pieces with a soft piano chord accompaniment I was reminded of the mellow piano sounds of Norah Jones on her first few albums.br /br /MCC has a particular way of vocalizing phrases that is very precise and requires close listening to each minute sound - she may be singing, but at times, with her phrasing, I think she is almost speaking - not sure if I am listening to a poet singing, or a singer reciting the words of a poem musically. She knows how to connect lyrics that are positioned to rhyme. br /br /This CD's collections of songs requires one to get into a deeper more reflective state, to connect with the beautiful chord changes, thoughtful personal reflections, and resonant deep voice, whose effect is not meant to stimulate you in the usual superficial sense, but to allow you to go deeper into your own self, to connect you with the part of yourself that knows the meaning of gratitude and what the holy season is about.br /br /While most of these songs have a specific reference to Christmas, they also function on a broader platform, allowing lovers of spiritual music, in the folk/jazz idiom to enjoy the offering, knowing no specific time frame to just December.br /br /Can't recall which song it was, but one of them had many chord changes, beautifully linked to each other, propelling the momentum of the song forward. If written as a simple folk song, this would not have been as interesting.br /br /What makes this CD superior to the normal rendition of Christmas themed music is the musical and lyrical treatment applied by MCC and her musicians.br /br /I recommend this music to lovers of contemplative spiritual folk music who are willing to tune into a slower paced expression of such spirit, and to still be able to embrace some electric guitar riffs one might expect in the background of the folk/rock songs of Karla Bonoff. br /br /Perhaps the darkness referred to in the title refers to that which causes us to go inward, connecting with the inner light, from which we can share with others in the form of gratitude and love - and this is what this music is about.
