Endless Chances to Sing Along January 4, 2009 When the film version of "Mamma Mia!" was released in July 2008, many wondered how an all-star Hollywood cast, including Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, and relative newcomer Amanda Seyfried, would fare singing some of ABBA's timeless classics. Overall, the group did an excellent job, with some songs shining brightly in the pop stratosphere.br /br /Without a doubt, the two singing stars from the film are Streep and Seyfriend. The former has particularly touching vocals on 'The Winner Takes It All' and rocks on the title track, while the latter shines in 'Honey, Honey' and 'Lay All Your Love on Me'. Colin Firth puts in a decent effort with his cohorts on 'Our Last Summer', and co-stars Christine Baranski and Julie Walters make 'Dancing Queen', 'Super Trouper', and 'Take a Chance on Me' even more delectable. br /br /Unfortunately, Pierce Brosnan's strained and often off-key attempts do detract from the soundtrack. While it was somewhat cute in the film, his butchering of 'When All is Said and Done' and 'SOS' keep the soundtrack from being a solid five stars. I do commend him for his efforts, but this is a musical, not a Bond film. I expected more.br /br /Overall, the soundtrack to "Mamma Mia!" is sure to please anyone who enjoyed the movie, providing endless chances to sing alone to one of the great musical films.
Talented Cast, but Disappointing CD January 2, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Forgetting the fact that the CD is missing Chiquitita and I Do I Do I Do, the takes of several songs on the CD are NOT the same used in the movie clearly the take of the song Mamma Mia sung by Meryl Streep is not the same one used in the movie, as well as Does Your Mother Know. the song Mamma Mia almost sounds as if it were recorded live during the filming in the movie. This is not that big of a deal, but in "Take a Chance on Me" you can barely hear Julie Waters on the CD, in the movie she sings the song while standing on the table (she starts a capella, clearly recorded just while filming, this obviously wouldnt have been on the cd), but on the cd the background singers are singing the ENTIRE song with her, loudly, you ca only hear her if you're REALLY trying to, which is unfortunate because she sounded great at the song. br /br /The sme thing goes for Dancing Queen, this song is sand early in the movie by Christine Baranski and Julie Waters, it is then sang again during the credits by these two, Meryl Streep and many background vocals. ONLY the take with background vocals is on the CD, and it is still in the spot as if it were in the movie. This is an overall disappointment to me, I think they wanted all the songs to sound more like the original abba recordings.. but that defeats the purpose of the movie soundtrack in my opinion. You'd be better off ripping the audio off the DVD in my opinion, because this is basically an Album recorded by the cast, but is by no means a Film Soundtrack.
New arrangements, original musicians make this special. December 31, 2008 A real treat here is the music was performed by Benny Andersson and many of the musicians from the original Abba recordings. We also get new arrangements of the songs, plus a different version with different lyrics of "When All Is Said and Done". I'd have to think that the new lyrics are from Bjorn with the new arrangements either by Benny or both. Given the level of control both keep over the Abba catalog, I can't imagine them allowing anyone else to change one of their best songs.br /br /While the vocals can never match the original Abba, the new arangements make this a very enjoyable CD, as close to new "Abba" music as we will ever get. (However Benny Andersson's "Bao" releases still contain all those classic Abba melodies, just performed differently.)br /br /
Great Soundtrack but Incomplete December 31, 2008 I loved the music for Mamma Mia, but unfortunatly this soundtrack is incomplete. It has all of the songs minus three:br /'Chiquitita'br /'I Do, I Do, I Do'br / 'Waterloo'br /With the addition of these three songs I would give this soundtrack five stars, but unfortunatly poeple like me who care about this sort of thing will have to wait for them to release a 'Complete' soundtrack to get all of the songs.
So-So Performances December 31, 2008 Going in, Mama Mia was working with the advantage of some very catchy, if flyweight tunes. But for a musical to really shine, the singers should be able to, you know, sing.br /br /I just can't fathom the thought process behind casting Pierce Brosnan. There are no good looking, middle aged actors who actually have some vocal chops? Robert Lindsay may not be a poster boy, but he could have killed in that role.br /br /I imagine there is a recording out there with a London or Broadway cast that would be much more rewarding listening.br /
